WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's swimming & diving team logged a 144-125 victory over the visiting Franciscan Barons.
With their year opening victory, the Presidents move to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. This marks the Presidents first victory since their win over Chatham (Nov. 2).
W&J swept the relay races in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The relay unit of Sophia Garrett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy), Maddie Malone (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello), Luna Balzano (El Portal, Fla./Broward Virtual School) and Morgan Baughman (West Newton, Pa./Mount Pleasant) finished first in the 200 medley with a mark of 2:04.08.
The quad of Taylor Newton (Olyphant, Pa./Scranton Prep), Balzano, Garrett and Baughman won the 200 free with a time of 1:49.16.
Baughman led the Presidents in individual events, winning the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle with respective times of 26.82 and 59.06.
Garrett posted two individual wins on the afternoon to bolster the Presidents scores. She won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with respective times of 1:08.32 and 2:25.56.
Balzano logged two first-place finishes on the afternoon for W&J. She bested swimmers in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly with respective times of 1:06.35 and 2:31.44.
Malone showcased her versatility in three events for the Presidents. In the breaststroke, Malone took first in the 200 yard with a time of 2:54.12 and second in the 100 yard with a mark of 1:20.37. She also placed second in the 200-yard IM, racing to a 2:38.84 time.
The sold swimmer on the day for W&J, Amiyah White (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) won the 1-meter dive with a total score of 321.65.
The Swimming & Diving teams return to the pool this coming Saturday (Jan. 18) to face the Allegheny Gators. First event is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
