MANSFIELD, Pa. – In a tightly contested battle, this Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest between the Mansfield Mountaineer women's basketball team (7-7, 3-5 PSAC East) and Shippensburg (6-9, 3-6 PSAC East) saw the Mounties edge out the Raiders with a slim 71-70 victory, behind a Katie Sheeler free throw with two seconds remaining.
Sheeler led the Mountaineers with a double-double having 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Danae Ellzy followed up with 15 points and an efficient performance from the arc as she was 3-6 from three-point range.
Cydney Stanton poured in 15 points and seven rebounds, while shooting 7-10 from the field.
The Mountaineers had a hot start to the contest with going on a 10-0 run through the first five minutes.
Ship quickly responded by earning their shots at the free throw line and gaining ten points off turnovers.
Before time expired in the first quarter, Kristen Fulford was able to get a putback layup at the buzzer to set the Mounties up 19-15.
Mansfield could not find a rhythm from the arc throughout the second quarter which allowed Shippensburg to stick close behind.
The Mountaineers were able to hold on to their lead by dominating the paint and taking advantage of second chance opportunities of 12 points and headed into the second half with the lead at 40-33.
In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Mountaineers started hot where they left off, but the Raiders did not go away in this contest, only being down ten at the 7:40 mark.
The tides started to change as Shippensburg found their shooting stroke, shooting 50 percent from the field in the quarter, which cut Mansfield's lead to three entering the final quarter at 56-53.
The Mountaineers and the Raiders started the fourth quarter with a defensive battle as the score was at a standstill in first two and a half minutes.
Mansfield continued to control the pace as Stanton and Ellzy traded baskets with each other giving the Mounties a five-point advantage at 62-57. The Raiders stayed in the hunt as they gained two crucial back-to-back layups to get with three at 1:21 remaining.
Mansfield brought the lead to 69-64, but that quickly changed as the Raiders responded with a must-need three pointer with 17 seconds remaining.
After a Sarah Hortin free throw, Ship used their chance to tie the contest at 70, popping off a three-pointer with 11 seconds left.
Sheeler broke away in the final possession, causing a foul to send for the chance to ice it, with one of her two free throws sinking in the net to take away the slim 71-70 victory.
